The Best Washable Rugs: Flor Carpet Tiles & Ruggable Review

I have a rug problem, but it’s different than my plant problem. I am basically never happy with my rugs, the number I have gone through over the years is absolutely insane. Every time we move I think, I’m going to get the rugs right this time. It’s been quite the battle. Finally, after 6 apartments and 1 house, and I think my quest for the perfect rug has come to an end.

All of these homes had mostly wood flooring, except for some bedrooms. It started with a gorgeous rug that I got on sale at Homegoods, that shed tiny wool particles and was impossible to clean. Then it was a series of IKEA rugs in all shapes, sizes and textures. Then we switched to FLOR Carpet Tiles and are currently trying out Ruggable.

My biggest pet peeve with rugs is just how terrible for the environment they can be. I have no idea how many rugs an average person has in their lives, but I am guessing that it’s a major contributor to a lot of crap in landfills. If you are moving the idea of adding a professional rug cleaning to your to-do list to sell it just sounds a bit much. They are nearly impossible to donate or recycle unless they are made from certain materials and most rugs don’t qualify for that due to large amounts of synthetic materials. Yes, there are standard rug sizes, but it’s really difficult to move and have a rug that worked in a bedroom in one apartment or house work in the next home. Sometimes it’s a location of a floor vent or the layout of the furniture in the room, or your color palette has changed or the rug just looks plain old and nasty after years of walking, eating, pets, and playing on it with kids.

I had high hopes for Flor Carpet Tiles in our last apartment. I thought that since we could add to them or remove tiles to change the shape that they would be more flexible to move to new rooms or homes. The downside was actually getting them to stick back together after the first time - yes you can order more of the stickers that you use on the bottom, but I was lazy and tried other sticky things and obviously none of them worked and I just got annoyed by the whole process.

However, the real issue was that the colors just didn’t go in our new house at all. It was a totally different vibe. The good news is that they offer FREE recycling! So, I emailed customer support and they sent prepaid boxes and I returned them after 3 years which was pretty cool. They didn’t quite work for us but they are still in the running for our living room since we need an odd size and I want it to be washable and I love that they are recyclable.

There were people looking for rugs on our Buy Nothing group at the beginning of the pandemic to help turn garages into school pods, so I cleaned one up and gave it to another family which was great.

We now have 3 ruggables and I am looking forward to another but they don’t quite have the size that we need.

Are Ruggables Worth It?

YES! They are a little pricey, but think of the money you will save by being able to wash it and not needing to buy a new rug after a few years with pets, potty training or wine spills from entertaining.

Ruggable’s patented rug system comes in two pieces: a lightweight rug cover and a nonslip rug pad.

  • This means that the top layer can be removed and washed in the washing machine. Actual washable rugs. Wow!

  • The rug cover is stain-resistant and water-resistant

  • The pad is non slip so the rug will always stay in place. It’s basically the same material as a yoga mat. It also comes in a standard and a thicker pad if you want a little more squish under your toes.

  • Pet friendly rugs

  • Kid and potty training friendly rugs too (I’m looking at you Oh Crap method parents).

  • They offer washable shag, washable doormats (what an obviously good idea), washable runners, outdoor rugs and everything in between.
